We'll detour slightly from our usual format for this lead story:

On Election Day in 1964 (November 4), Len Ellis introduced a brand new AM station to Valparaiso: WAYK (1500am). In 1967, he added something new to the radio dial by changing WAYK to WAKE and adding WAKE-FM (105.5fm). The company remained family owned after Mr. Ellis retired, as his son Leigh managed the radio stations.

Adams Radio Group just announced an Indiana expansion by acquiring the Valparaiso-based Radio One Communications, owners of Oldies/WAKE (1500am, Valparaiso), Country/WLJE (105.5fm, Valparaiso), Classic Rock/WXRD (103.9fm, Crown Point) and Modern AC/WZVN (107.1fm, Lowell). Radio One acquired WXRD and WZVN for $4.9 million in late 2003. Kalil and Company served as the exclusive broker for this transaction.

Northeast

Doug Gruber, legendary broadcaster at Northeast Indiana Public Radio's Talk-Jazz/WBOI (89.1fm, Fort Wayne) and Classical/WBNI (94.1fm, Roanoke) passed away at age 77. Mr. Gruber stepped down at NIPR in January after receiving news that he had ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). In the 1960s, Mr. Gruber worked at WOWO radio ("Doug Stephens") in the 1960s, as a reporter. "Doug has been an integral part of 89.1 WBOI and Classical 94.1 WBNI for nearly 20 years," NIPR president and GM Peter Dominowski said when Gruber left in January. "Our stations, and our community, are a better place because of his many talents as a broadcaster. No one could possibly replace his unique talents."

Sarkes Tarzian's Hot AC/WAJI (95.1fm, Fort Wayne) rebrands as "95.1 Best-FM" after 28 and a half years as "Majic 95.1." Also, morning man Dirk Rowley will soon exit after fourteen years to co-host the "INsight" program on Granite Broadcasting's NBC affiliate WISE-TV (Channel 33, Fort Wayne). Finally, here's the new website address: http://951bestfm.com

Northeast Indiana Public Radio closes on the $113,000 translator CP sale of W258BY (99.5fm, Fort Wayne) Fort Wayne Catholic Radio Group, pending FCC approval. Brokers on the deal: Bob Heymann of Media Services Group (NIPR) and Jon Yinger of Broadcast Properties LLC (Fort Wayne Catholic Radio Group).

There's a new night jock at Federated Media's Hot AC/WMEE (97.3fm, Fort Wayne): Clay Alan earns the promotion from weekends. OM Jimmy Knight moves to middays (10am until 2pm) and PM driver Boomer now is on 2pm until 7pm.

Northwest

Artistic Media Partners' Country/WSHP (95.7fm, Attica) flips call letters to WYCM ("Your Country Music").

Central

After more than 26 years, Warren Central High School's Variety/WEDM (91.1fm, Indianapolis) GM Dan Henn retires as Station Manager. Bill Whitehair replaces Mr. Henn.

Emmis Communications promotes their Indianapolis OM and Country/WLHK (97.1fm, Shelbyville) PD Bob Richards to cluster VP/Programming. Replacing Mr. Richards in the "Hank FM" PD chair is "Hank FM" MD and middayer Fritz Moser. Emmis/Indianapolis Director of Sales Tracey Bean becomes cluster VP/Sales. Emmis SVP/Indianapolis MM Charlie Morgan comments, "It has been my privilege to work side-by-side with Bob for more than two decades and, without fail, I learn from his thinking and leadership and admire his character and professionalism. Since his arrival here at Emmis more than four years ago, the ratings success of all four properties has grown and the quality of our content is unmatched in our marketplace. Like Fritz and Bob, I have known and worked with Tracey for portions of the past two decades and am a huge fan of her passion, creativity, strategic thinking and caring for the development of her teams. It is no secret that, just as we have experienced in ratings in Tracey's tenure as director of sales, the Emmis cluster has grown from being the third-highest-billing cluster to a dominant #1 biller."

Continental Broadcast Group's Spanish Oldies/WSYW (810am, Indianapolis) flips format to Spanish Contemporary Christian Christian as "Pescador" (Fisherman).

The University of Indianapolis' Jazz-Classical/WICR (88.7fm, Indianapolis) redesigns its website: http://www.wicronline.org

Where Are They Now? Former Clear Channel, Indianapolis OM Buzz Casey becomes OM at Townsquare's Hudson Valley and Poughkeepsie, New York clusters.

Westcentral

Brion O'Brion is the new night jock at Midwest Communications' CHR/WMGI (100.7fm, Terre Haute)

Southeast

For the last two years, New Albany Broadcasting Company did an LMA with WAY Media's WLUE (104.3fm, Charlestown). New Albany put a classic hits format on 104.3fm ("Louie 104.3"). That LMA ends, and WLUE returns to a Contemporary Christian format, as "Way-FM."

Clear Channel adds the Cleveland, Ohio-based "Rover's Morning Glory" show to its Active Rock/WTFX (93.1fm, Clarksville).

Southcentral

Indiana University's NPR affiliate/WFIU (103.7fm, Bloomington) and its five FM translators around the Hoosier state make a weekend programming change: "Says Now!" expands to an hour on Saturday, from Noon until 1pm.
