Indiana RadioWatch: December 5, 2014
From the e-mail bag: "I having been looking into finding vintage radio broadcast of Notre Dame football during the 1948-50 season. I was wondering if the local broadcast were WGAZ/WSBT in South Bend, Indiana? Could you please clarify. If not then what local broadcaster carried the signal? Who was the national carrier?"
Now, onto the news:
A former Indianapolis radio station owner passed away last night, his 69th birthday. Bill Mays grew up in Evansville, but certainly made his mark in Indianapolis. He founded and owned the Mays Chemical Company. In 1992, he was part of the ownership team that owned WHHH (96.3fm, Indianapolis), then-WGGR (106.7fm, Greenwood) and then-WIRE (100.9fm, now Speedway), along with a LPTV station then-W53AV (then on Channel 53, Indianapolis). Messrs. Shirk and Mays sold the entire cluster in 2000 for $40 million to Radio One. Mr. Mays also owned the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper. We don't yet have funeral details for Mr. Mays.
The Original Company flips format on their Adult Hits/WEJK (107.1fm, Boonville) to Classic Hits. Also, the call letters become WJPS.
Northeast Indiana Public Radio's Talk-Jazz/WBOI (89.1fm, Fort Wayne) adds "Ask Me Another" on Sunday evenings from 7pm until 8pm.
Adams Radio Group's AC/WWFW (103.9fm, Fort Wayne) flips to an all-holiday music format.
Talking Stick Communications' Active Rock/WRBR (103.9fm, South Bend) promotes Erica Ogle to GSM, replacing Ann Earnhart-Tenney who exits.
