Station History

1290am signed on December 6, 1956 from studios located at 41 Sycamore Street, Niles, Michigan (Telephone: Mutual 3-5432) (Why the strange looking telephone number?). WNIL was an affiliate of the Keystone Broadcasting System. In 1958, Lawrence Plym (Niles Broadcasting Co.) proposed selling WNIL to the Niles Daily Star newspaper for $123,000. Studios later moved to the WNIL transmitter site at 210 S. Philip Rd., Niles, Michigan (49120-8924). As a standards format, WNIL used ABC ("Timeless Classics"). WNIL later flipped formats from Jones Radio Network's "Good Time Oldies" to ABC's "Lite 2000" format in April 2000. Flipped formats from Talk to Sports on June 4, 2012. In May 2014, Pathfinder Communications Corp. sold WNIL(AM) for $225,000 to Marion R. Williams.
