Indiana RadioWatch: April 3, 2013
On 13 April, The Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association will induct five into their 2013 Hall of Fame class:
Mark Boyle (radio voice of the Indiana Pacers)
Mike "Doc" Emrick (NHL hockey voice, LaFontaine native, and in 2012, he worked a Fort Wayne Komets game on WOWO(AM) and WOWO-FM with his idol and mentor Bob Chase)
Andy Graham (sportswriter, Bloomington Herald-Times)
The late Bill Robertson (sportswriter, Evansville Press from the 1930s through the 1970s)
The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette sportswriter and columnist Ben Smith.
Also on the radio side, the Marv Bates Sportscaster of the Year goes to WPGW's Rob Weaver, and the Distinguished Service Award posthumously goes to Fort Wayne broadcaster Len Davis.
Northeast
Later today, Oasis Radio Group's Rhythmic/WHPP (106.3fm, Columbia City) will flip formats to 1990s pop, as "Rewind 106.3." Core artists include Christina Aguilera, Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson, N*SYNC, Britney Spears and T.L.C. Oasis
GM Phil Becker will handle middays while Oasis Production Director Chris Cruise will take PM Drive. As for WHPP's current "ClickHop.com," that moves exclusively online (oddly enough at http://www.clickhop.com/) under new PD (and web
guru) Wes Teska.
LIN Media CBS affiliate WANE-TV (Channel 15, Fort Wayne) weekend meteorologist Lee Ann Okuly exits for the bright lights of Dayton, Ohio and the same position at WKEF-TV/WRGT-TV. She's a Huntington, Indiana native.
After Don Moore's very untimely death in January, John O'Rourke becomes GM and continues as morning host at Northeast Indiana Broadcasting's MOR/WAWK (1140am, Kendallville) and translator W238BH (95.5fm, Kendallville)
Where Are They Now? Former WLAB morning host Ace McKay now handles mornings (alongside Sabrina Fairchild) at WJQK in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Eastcentral
Cumulus' Country/WMDH-FM (102.5fm, New Castle) hires Amanda Rollen away from Backyard's Hot AC/WLBC (104.1fm, Muncie). At WLBC, Ms. Rollen hosted nights, while on WMDH-FM she hosts middays.
Central
Entercom's Adult Hits/WNTR (107.9fm, Indianapolis) and Sports/WXNT (1430am, Indianapolis) PD Scott Roddy exits and heads west, now programming KAFE-FM in Bellingham, Washington.
Emmis N-T WIBC (93.1fm, Indianapolis) afternoon host Ed Wenck exits to pound the pavement as a salesperson for sister station Sports/WFNI (1070am and 107.5fm, both Indianapolis). Replacing Mr. Wenck behind the microphone is WIBC's Ray
Steele.
107.5fm? What's that? Why that's WFNI's new FM translator that Emmis purchased from Kaspar Broadcasting for $375,000. Emmis moves W298BB in from Zionsville and onto the same tower with WHMB-TV on the tower farm alongside 79th Street
on the near northwest side of Indianapolis. The new 107.5 translator actually rebroadcasts WIBC-HD-2. WFNI and "107.5 The Fan" air both morning drive (ESPN's Mike and Mike) and afternoon drive (local host JMV). The translator airs
ESPN's "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" during middays. When play by play conflicts arise (Emmis airs Indiana Pacers basketball and Butler Bulldogs basketball, among other teams and sports), those conflicts will resolve themselves by
splitting the broadcasts among WFNI and "107.5 The Fan."
Westcentral
First Venture Capital Partners sells its translator W257CR (99.3fm, Marshall, Illinois) to Emmis Communications for $36,000. There's a CP already granted to move W257CR to 99.5fm, from a different tower (south of Marshall, Illinois,
on Illinois Route 1), or 12 miles south of its current site (north of Marshall).
Southeast
Repeat Time: Leeson Media, LLC completes its $350,000 purchase of Country/WRBI (103.9fm, Batesville) from White River Broadcasting Company. Ed Roehling's Roehling Broadcast Services brokered the deal.
Southwest
A tip of the IRW cap (now that it's baseball season, that's a Pawtucket Red Sox cap) to Henson Media owner Ed Henson, as the NAB elected Mr. Henson to their Radio Board. Henson Media owns Sports/WMSK(AM) (1550am, Morganfield,
Kentucky), Country/WMSK-FM (101.3fm, Sturgis, Kentucky), and the AM/FM combo Standards/WSON(AM) (860am) and translator W243CU (96.5fm, both Henderson, Kentucky)
Cross Roads Family Broadcasting never filed an FCC renewal form for its low power WJHP-LP (103.3fm, Carmi, Illinois), so the FCC deleted the radio station.
Mission Broadcasting takes the CW affiliation for Evansville and places it on its WTVW (Channel 7, Evansville). This marks the third affiliation since 1956 when the station signed on. WTVW meant "ABC" for nearly forty years, followed
by about fifteen years waving the FOX banner. The CW lineup airs weekly (7pm until 9pm), followed by an hour of news. The CW banner last flew at Roberts Broadcasting's now silent WAZE-LP (Channel 19, Evansville). Also we have word
of two departures: Zakk Gammon exits as the Western Kentucky bureau chief for WTVW and Nexstar's ABC affiliate WEHT-TV (Channel 25, Evansville), and David Shepherd, weekend anchor and political director exits.
Princeton Broadcasting Company's Talk/WRAY(AM) (1250am, Princeton) adds the Herman Cain show, replacing Neal Boortz from 9am until 12pm.
Way Media sells its W218CR (91.5fm, Central City, Kentucky) for $10,000 to Bud Walters' Hancock Communications. There's already a FCC application to move the translator to 103.7fm, and relicense it to Tell City, Indiana, which would
put it in the same town as Mr. Walters' WTCJ(AM) (1230am). The application also proposes a power increase from 27 watts to 250 watts with a tower site move from Central City, Kentucky to the WLME-FM/WTCJ-FM tower (both owned by
Hancock) southwest of Tell City
